Mr Samuel Kofi Essel
Mr. Samuel Kofi Essel’s journey of excellence in teaching began after successfully completing
his A-Levels at St. John’s School, Sekondi in 1982. He then matriculated at the University of
Cape Coast and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree (Chemistry Major) and a diploma
certificate in education.
Mr. Essel taught Chemistry and Integrated Science at his alma mater, St. John’s School from
1990 to 2013. At St. John’s, he was noted for hard work, punctuality, team spirit, and
truthfulness in the performance of his duties. His commitment to work led to his appointment
as Head of the Science Department from 2005 to 2012. He went back to the University of Cape
Coast for graduate studies and obtained a Master’s Degree in Science Education. Aside
teaching, Mr. Essel was also a patron of the St. John’s Science and Mathematics Club.
With about twenty six years (26) of teaching experience under his belt; he was appointed
Assistant Headmaster (Academic) at the Tarkwa Senior High School in the Western Region on
the 6 th of January 2014. After nearly two (2) years at Tarkwa SHS, the zeal, commitment and
enthusiasm in the performance of his duties resulted in a meteoric rise; an appointment to
become the 22 nd Headmaster of Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS), Takoradi.
Mr. Essel has served on the Board of Governors (BOG) of St. John’s School –Sekondi. He is also
the author of “Practical Chemistry for Senior High Schools (SamKofel’s Series)” a popular
chemistry textbook for Senior High School (SHS) students.
He is a devoted member of the Assemblies of God Church-Ghana, a deacon, a director of a
church ministry, a singer, a guitarist and an organist. He is married to Mrs. Juliana Annett Essel
and a father of three strong boys, Andy, Stephen and Sydney.
